The firm was incorporated in 1960 under the name Dwayne J. Meyer and Associates. Among Mr. Meyer's employees was Harold Clothier. After Mr. Meyer passed away, Harold purchased the business from Mr. Meyer's wife and, in 1970, changed the name to Harold H. Clothier and Associates, Inc. Throughout his career, Harold worked with several notable names in the home-building community. He and the firm were responsible for designing homes in many Houston-area neighborhoods, many of which remain highly desirable today.
Harold was also instrumental in the creation of the Texas Institute of Building Design and its affiliation with the American Institute of Building Design, a national organization responsible for accrediting and certifying designers annually.
John L. Sullivan Jr. began working for Harold in 1968 while studying at the University of Houston. Over the years, word spread that Harold had a highly talented and gifted young designer who was attracting new clients to the firm. John quickly developed a knack for listening to clients and designing in real-time as they discussed ideas for their homes. He became a partner in 1972.
In 1976, John and Harold changed the firm’s name to Clothier/Sullivan and Associates, Inc. As the firm grew, its reach expanded beyond the Houston metro area into other parts of Texas and, eventually, to numerous states across the country.
After Harold passed in 1990, John became the sole owner of the firm. Determined to maintain the high standards he and Harold had worked to establish—and to secure the firm’s future—John brought in new talent, seeking individuals who could carry on the firm’s legacy when the time came for him to step away.
